A2 - 3 days-  A Stumpwork Mirror or Casket- Ela Kiefhaber

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Stumpwork embroidery is a raised embroidery form, which was very popular in the 1700s. Some of the embroidered elements are padded for a 3D effect and numerous stiches and different techniques needle lace are used.
The Stumpwork pieces were the “crowning glory” and marked the end of the education in needlework for young girls in the 1700s. The projects are covered with embroidery showing off all the techniques they learned – the same for our miniature version!

Stumpwork is a combination of basic embroidery techniques like chain stitch, French knots, different types of needle lace and other three dimensional stitch techniques.
I will share the technique how to mimic trims and gimps and even embroidery.
After working on a sampler to learn the different techniques for embroidery and needle lace, students will work on their individual design, which can be based on a historic example or could be an interpretation with historic elements. They can choose to do a mirror in one of the historic shapes or a modern version or decorate a casket – they can bring their own casket or purchase one from me that is based on a historic piece, made by Alvaro Rodriguez.
It is a very different and interesting embroidery technique, which is still very popular today. The result is a very unique piece and surely an eye catcher in every collection.
Completion is unlikely, but students will have all materials and techniques to finish it at home!

Material fee: €45  excluding casket
Casket by Alvaro Rodriguez (Spain) €35.- , measurements: 25mm wide, 14mm deep, 16mm high

A3 - 3 days- Luce (1:24 scale) - Erik Goddard

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Luce is a deceptively simple scene showing a small raised plaza. But with a staircase on one side, tunnels on the other and the odd doors and the suggestion of parts unseen, there seems to be much happening just out of sight, making Luce a complex scene with various nooks and crannies that hint at a deeper complexity, where shadows become “light” and your own story can emerge. You will learn to use several different techniques to create stone/stucco/brick and aging effects.
The dimensions of this piece are approximately 14cm wide, 18 tall and about 15 deep.
Tools recommended: A few paint brushes of various sizes, tweezers, exacto knife, mitre box and saw if you have them, and glue such as Weldbond, Ultimate, Annie’s Tacky, etc.
Plants and flowers shown in photos are for illustration only and are not part of the project.

Materials fee:  €25

A6 - 3 days- Coal/ash bucket - Ursula Dyrbye-Skovsted

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

This is an intense class in metalwork. We will use brass shim and wire. The separate pieces will be cut with a jeweler's saw. By annealing the brass, it gets soft enough to be bent and shaped over jigs. Then the parts are riveted and soldered together.

The fancy hinges are cut with a jeweler's saw, filed, and buffed. There will be different patterns with different complexities.

Some parts will be pre-made.
Some parts can be turned on a small metal lathe.
Materials fee: €70
